Football Anyone here into the NFL? I am just sooooooooooo happy that my bears have won 2 weeks in a row (the first week beating, no, CRUSHIN', our biggest rival, the %$#&^% GB cheeseheads)!!!Thought if there were any other football (college or pro) junkies out there, we could talk some schmack here...

Re: Football Yeah, Beaner...the Bears are lookin pretty good so far. Grossman threw to everybody but the cheerleaders, didn't he? Good stuff. My Boilers won too (and Notre DUMB lost! ). Granted, they were playing Ball State, but dude still threw for over 400 yards...

Re: Football Hey, Driveshaft! I think I heard you once say that you weren't a Hockey fan, except for Lindros. Would that be Eric Lindros? He's playing for the Dallas Stars this year..... I hope that's a good thing because, except for the name, I don't know much about him.

Re: Football Well, it USED to be a good thing, and I'm hoping it still is. He was awesome in Philly, til he had some concussions, and as a result, issues with management. He kinda faded away after that. But I'm hoping he's still worth paying to see, cuz my buddy and I are thinking of going up to Dallas to check out a game now that he's here.

Re: Football Driveshaft: I guess that's why the Stars only signed him for 1 year..... If you do come to Dallas, try for a night game, if possible. For some strange reason, the Stars aren't always their best in afternoon games. It must be a "body clock" thing... Go Stars!

Re: Football Lady, the strike in the 80's??? even the BEARS have won a superbowl since then (and that tells you how long ago that was). Hockey has "striked" (is that a word?) more recently, so surely you can give football another chance!

Re: Football Can you imagine making your living by playing the sport you love? What a dream. Now try to imagine going on strike, despite the fact that you are earning far more by playing a game you love than most people make slaving 5 days a week at a job they hate. It's a wonder that anyone watches professional sports at all.

Re: Football Sorry, Beaner, but there was an arrogance that crept into football after the strike (both players and owners) which turned me off. No, not all players and owners are arrogant, but way too many are. Sometimes I think that Sports Agents are a lot like Divorce Lawyers. Their greed makes things turn really ugly! So far, I haven't seen so much of that in Hockey (in Dallas, anyway). Our Star player (Mike Modano) took a HUGE pay cut just to stay with the only team he's ever played for. Yes, he did turn down two teams who offered him more money than he was making in Dallas before the strike! He did go against his agent's advice because he loves the game, his team and his fans. He's at peace with that decision.

Re: Football I tend to agree with Lady.Pro sports has way too much "entitlement" in the ranks. The last hockey game (and the only one I've watched in years before or since) I watched was Canada Vs. U.S.A. at the Olympics in '02.I DJ at the bar in the arena where the Ottawa Senators play, so I see hockey a lot, but I always bring a book to read while the game is on. That gets some looks. Never was a football fan, NFL or CFL (That's the Canadian Football League - 3 Downs, 1 less guy on the field, wider and longer field and endzones, uprights at the front of the endzone not the back, no fair catch rule, washed up NFL stars and those that couldn't make it...)If it weren't for Cal Ripken Jr. and the Mark MacGuire/Sammy Sosa steriod driven homerun derby that year, baseball would have half the fan base it now enjoys and might not have recovered at all from the strike. I'd still be watching, but I'd bet that I'd be in a rapidly decreasing minority.I was in Dubai the year that Mark and Sammy were counting out homers with their hooves. Followed it all on the net, since all I got on tv over there was cricket, soccer and Bollywood "movies".Point being, I'm a HUGE baseball fan. I love the game. The salaries turn me off though. Had I the skill, I would play the game for nothing more than a reasonable yearly salary and a decent retirement package. These days, some of the players can make more in a year than an average person makes in a lifetime and that ain't right. Sure, they've got extraordinary skills and talent, and yes, they only have a few short years to cash in on them, but when is enough enough? Or too much?Agents are the root of the problem. 15% of 25 Million is just that much better than 15% of 18 million, or whatever. I say put all the agents and all the lawyers in the world in a big room, tell them that they have to fight it out to the death, lock the door and fill the room with molten lead while they're argueing about who is going to sell the TV rights to the fight...

Re: Football While I am with GB on the whole salary thing, I do adore a good game of football or hockey. Sadly, I have not had the opportunity to watch any football yet this season. I did manage to take my daughter to Steelers training camp a few weeks ago. It was AWESOME. We both had a great time. We have taken the kids to a few hockey games when we are at my mom's house in PA. Their local team is a farm team for....um....I don't know, some NHL team. The great thing about watching them play is that they all hold regular jobs in the off-season. One is a construction worker, and I don't remember the others. All of they guys on the team are playing because they love the game and are either hoping to make it to the NHL or have already been there and are playing on this team until they absolutely can't play any more. They are regular guys. They have a "Skate with the Team" after their Sunday afternoon games. If you bring a pair of skates, that's all you need to get out on the ice with them. After EVERY game, at least 3 guys will hang around to give autographs, and it's usually more than just three of them. I've learned a lot about hockey in the past year. I enjoy going to the games as much, if not more, than my husband and kids do. And this particular team/franchise is very family friendly. They've always got stuff going on for the kids. It's particularly sweet when they have a deal on tickets--buy one adult ticket, get a child's ticket free. Even so, the tickets are pretty cheap without the deal. I'm sure the bigger NHL teams aren't so accomodating, but we sure are enjoying watching this one.

Re: Football Yes, GB, agents are a BIG part of the problem, but here's the thing- The stars getting those fat checks more than earn them, because of return on investment. This works two ways:1.) Ticket sales. I KNOW Dallas (T.O.) and New Orleans (Reggie Bush) are expecting-and at least in New Orleans' case-SEEING a dramatic increase in ticket sales simply because of who they have on the roster. Those people who are buying tickets are also paying for parking in the stadium lot, buying hot dogs, nachos, beer, and more merchandise than you could shake a foam finger at. Won't be too long before they are actually turning a profit, and his contract is negated in terms of their bottom line. If most of those people are only spending that money because they came to see Reggie Bush, why SHOULDN'T he see a large chunk of that?2.) Every team is in business to do one thing: Win championships. That's why Steinbrenner constantly (and, of late, fruitlessly) stocks his roster. Usually, this is done by attracting big-name talent; and as long as guys can command big money- and, often, bigger money from competitors- in pursuit of a title (which leads to more money for the front office of the team), they'll get it. Obviously, this line of thinking doesn't always work the way it's supposed to (hence, the term "bust"). But it works often enough, and frankly, more power to them...

Re: Football Hi, Driveshaft! The Dallas Cowboys don't have a problem selling tickets. If anyone does buy a ticket just to see T.O., it's to watch him crash and burn. Except for Jerry Jones, I don't know anyone who wants him here! On a lighter note, Eric Lindros scored a goal in Phoenix Wednesday night. His first game in Denver on Tuesday was somewhere between awful and disasterous (he knocked over his own linemate who was moving the puck nicely down the ice!). In his second game, they put him on Brendan Morrow's line (my second favorite Dallas Star) as a wing and he did much, Much, MUCH better!

Re: Football Beaner: That's the big news story that I woke up to this morning. We'll see how it plays out. The police say that no crime was committed so they are dropping the case and are refusing to discuss it further. The police report distributed to the press had a bunch of stuff blacked out (the stuff about his admitting to trying to harm himself and what his lady friend said when she called 911).His agents and publicists are trying to say that he had an allergic reaction to his pain meds which he had been on for over a week..... There is supposed to be a press conference this afternoon by the Cowboys and, possibly, T.O. himself.
